I had seen preview information about the game Crysis (sequel to Far Cry) since its inception. I never really kept my eye on it as I had with other games. But a recent post in an ars technica forum made me go ga-ga. The graphics are visually stunning and game mechanics are terrifingly real. I would like to see how the game engine stacks up against the new UT engine. If you’re too lazy to click through for the post or its not loading, below is some copy pasta. If you don’t want to download stuff, just go to the last link in the blockquote. Its a flash embedded movie player that shows off some very nice special effects the game offers.
Noticed that GameTrailers have now posted both parts of the GDC Crysis Sandbox 2 real-time level editor demo which shows various features of the editor and CryENGINE 2. Crytek’s Sandbox 2 had its first public presentation at the recently held Game Developers Conference.
Part 1 – Outdoor stuff
View distance (16km), LOD system (no portals), clouds, time-of-day lighting, shadows, destructible environments, forests/vegetation system, terrain sculpting/editing and the voxel terrain system.
Part 2 – Outdoor + indoor
Roads, buildings and elements/blocks system, more LOD, indoor elements editing and networking, indoor lighting, water surface/underwater effects, waves, game logic, entities and track view tools (camera).
I know very little about game developing or about making levels or how hard it is and such but SB2 looks quite effortless and userfriendly, so, that even a guy like me could perhaps be able to make something nice with it. Very impressive stuff and CryENGINE 2 is amazing as well.
For extra kicks there’s also the CryENGINE 2 special effects trailer complete with a nuclear explosion in the end (also filmed at GDC):
And of course here’s the set of real life vs Crysis generated screenshots thats been making its rounds. If there pictures weren’t so small it would be nice. But its a good preview in spite of its viewing difficulty. http://www.gamersnation.co.uk/Core/article/sid=1384/title=Crysis:_Realistic_Graphics_vs_Real_Life.html
